Security

Safe handling of earthing brushes and earthing devices is particularly important!

It is important to observe and follow basic safety precautions when operating a grounding brush in high speed environments, confined spaces or chemically aggressive atmospheres. The precautions and procedures required will depend on the specific application. While Sohre Turbomachinery® has made every effort in the design of our grounding brushes to accommodate a wide variety of applications adapted to the particular industry or operating conditions, the responsibility for the installation of a brush remains solely with the user. It is also the responsibility of the user to determine the suitability of the design and materials of that brush for a particular application, operating conditions or environment etc.

Installation should only be carried out by qualified and experienced engineers, technicians and mechanics who must be familiar with all the features and requirements of their equipment and who are also well versed in their industry. Improper installation and operation can result in serious - possibly catastrophic - injury to personnel and damage to equipment.

Prevention

IMPORTANT: Even under normal conditions, the electrical voltage on an underground installed earthing brush that comes into contact with the shaft can be unexpectedly high (e.g. several hundred volts). Consequently, when handling, it is always better to assume that an installed brush is under high voltage than to assume otherwise.

In addition, high shaft currents can lead to overheating, sparking and electric shocks. If extreme currents are present, the earthing brush should be taken out of service by either lifting it off the shaft or removing it completely.

Note: Once the brush has been removed, the machine is no longer protected against damage caused by shaft currents. Consequently, immediate corrective action must then be taken, including shutting down the machine if necessary.
